Still smokey

There is a 5700 hectare forest fire burning south of us. It was in Washington, but it's jumped the border into BC. I am not sure how far away it is, but we don't usually see smoke until the late afternoon...this footage was taken at 7am.

There are actually 2 fires. One that is moving towards Keremeos, BC and the other threatens Manning Provincial Park (2 hours drive from here and a great park).

Right now Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the First Amendment of the Internet -- a principle called "network neutrality" that preserves the free and open Internet. Congress needs to hear from you today or they will hand over control of what you do online to companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast.

Politicians are trading favors for campaign donations from these companies. They're being wooed by people like AT&T's CEO, who says "the Internet can't be free." You can sign this petition to tell your elected representatives to protect Internet freedom now.

An Osprey in Naramata

We drove out to Naramata and were surprised to see this amazing bird. The Osprey is a large, powerful raptor (bird of prey).

Here is some more information on the Osprey

It is one of the most widely distributed birds in the world. When an Osprey spots a fish from the air, it hovers at a height of 10 to 30 m until the fish is in a suitable position. Then, in a dramatic performance, the bird, huge yet wonderfully light, dives from the sky with its wings half closed and claws stretched forward, and disappears under the surface in a great spray of water, usually reappearing a few seconds later with a fish firmly clutched in its claws

We have a lot of starlings around here. Some have even nested in our drainage off our patio. Anne gives us some history on why we even have startlings here (they aren't native to this area)

Europeans brought them with them when they came over to remind them of home. Unfortunately they are an aggressive bird and have killed off most of the songbirds that are native to the area.

I have been testing out eyespot.com for our Testing-Grounds review site. Here's a clip, actually 2 clips that I 'mixed' together using eyespot.

It's a snappy site that allows you to uloaded clips and mix them with your clips or other peoples. Long live the mash-up!

They are still in beta (isn't everyone these days?) and plan to add transitions and fades...should be cool.
